Why You Might Want to Hold an All Hands Meeting? Sometimes you need to get information out to the entire staff, and an all-hands meeting is an excellent opportunity to do that. Yes, you can send out the information via email, but depending on the information, you may find that delivering it in person is a more effective way to communicate. Additionally, depending on how big and spread out your business is, the all-hands meeting is a good opportunity to build teams and allow employees to network with each other. and allow employees to network with each other. If your business has several sites, an employee at site A may have a problem that someone at site B can solve, but if they dont know that person exists, they wont ask for help. Finally, an all-hands meeting allows your employees to ask questions in the presence of their colleagues. You may find that it is fun to choose and invite the speakers, prepare the documents, and plan for networking time, but if you fail on the logistics side, your all-hands meeting wont work. You need to deal with these issues for a successful all-hands meeting. Location. If your bus iness is small and you can all fit around the conference table, then this problem is solved. If your company is large- evenif you all work in the same building, youll probably need to rent an auditorium or conference center for your meeting. Make sure you have seating for everyone.Travel. Will people have to travel long distances to come to your all-hands meeting? If people need to drive from a distance, make sure you begin the meeting late enough that your staff doesnt have to leave home at 400 am to make it to the meeting. Remember, leaving home early is a hardship for many. Practicality. An all-hands face-to-face meeting may be the best way to introduce a new CEO. But, if it involves flying people in from multiple locations, and putting them up in hotels, while your offices in these locations shut down for multiple days, its probably not the best idea. Instead, consider doing video conferences. Dont allow people to watch the video conference from their desks, but ask them to come together by location for the team building opportunity of watching the introduction. Food. If this is a short one-hour meeting introducing the CEO, youll just need a location. If its a day-long conference involving multiple speakers and workshops, youll need to arrange for food for lunch and breaks. Who Needs to Present at an All-Hands Meeting? With these logistics sorted, you just need to arrange the speakers. Youll want to have company-wide changes introduced by the CEO/Owner/President. Departmental heads can explain issues that are relevant to their departments, but explanations about company-wide initiatives need to come from the top. Naturally, a change to HR policy can come from the Chief HR Officer, and a shift in marketing can come from the Chief absatzwirtschaft Officer, but the overall plan including goals, strategy, and vision needs to come from the top. Make sure that all employees are included- or its not an all-hands meeting. If the information is only relevant to managers, then why would you bring the individual contributors to the meeting? If the changes only affect IT, why is accounting taking the time to attend this meeting? What Needs to Happen at an All-Hands Meeting? All information you provide at an all-hands meeting needs to be relevant, timely, critical, and (hopefully) interesting. Sure, introducing how your company will comply with new government regulations is unlikely to result in cheering crowds. But remember, you are more likely to engage people if you present the information in an interesting way. In addition to the speakers and workshops (if applicable), make sure you provide time for networking. Networking is often thought of as something you do to find new jobs, but you can use networking internally as well. You want your staff to know each other. Provide name tags (if you dont generally wear badges) that display names and titles and locations. The overall goal of an all-hands meeting is to bring the company employees together. You want people to leave feeling like the meeting was worth their time. If you cant get the worthwhile feeling, skip the all-hands meeting and send out an email with the information instead.

Through your studies and work- when you look at people who have sustained excellence over an extended period of time, what are some of the common characteristics they all seem to possess?BarryI would say the secret, if there is one, to sustained excellence is that people really care about what theyre trying to achieve. Theyre working on something that they think matters. Ive observed that the other kinds of benefits tha t come with success tend to wear out. Once youve gotten all the promotions there are to get, and you are making all the money there is to make- what keeps you going? If youre doing it to be successful, you will plateau.If youre doing it because theres a new challenge that needs to be met, a new idea that needs to be explored, then the challenges just keep coming. The people I know who have been excellent throughout their careers are people who are doing their work for the right reasons.Once youve gotten all the promotions there are to get, and you are making all the money there is to make- what keeps you going?RyanThat reminds me a little bit of Liz Wiseman and her bookRookie Smarts.She basically says that once you feel like youve gotten it figured out, then its time to stretch. The people who have been able to sustain excellence over an extended period of time are constantly in a state of stretching themselves to learn, to grow, to improve. Have you noticed that with people? BarryY es. You want to make sure that you have a workplace environment where people are continually given the opportunity to stretch, to do new things, to take on challenges, to demonstrate mastery. As a leader, I think you want to set an environment where that sort of thing is encouraged rather than forced on people. One way to stay engaged is to face problems today that are different from the problems you faced yesterday.In my own case, when you teach in a university setting, every time you teach the course, its a new course, even if its got the same name. You can change the syllabus, you can change the content, you can do all kinds of things to make it different. Or, you can take out the folder of yellowed notes and just tell the same stories, year after year. In my experience the people who remained great in the classroom are people who, each time they teach the class, its still like the first time.One way to stay engaged is to face problems today that are different from the problems y ou faced yesterday.RyanIn July of 2005, you got up on a TED stage and gave an amazing TED Talk titled The Paradox of Choice, back before TED was a huge thing. Now, your talk has over nine million views. Can you distill some of the key points of what you mean by the paradox of choice?BarryMost Western societies have operated with the assumption that the mora choice people have, the better off they are. They are more likely to get what they want, they have more freedom, more autonomy, more control over their lives. We should take every opportunity to enhance choice, but its not without limit. When you go from having no choice to some choice, your life is better. But when you go from having some choice to essentially infinite choice, weird things start to happen. That was completely neglected by economists, by psychologists, by people in business, everybody.Instead of being liberated by all this choice, you get paralyzed. So you cant pull the trigger, and you choose nothing. You make w orse decisions, and even when you make good decisions, youre less satisfied. So my book,The Paradox of Choice, laid out this evidence that choice is a good thing, but there can be too much of a good thing. The book struck a nerve, and the TED Talk struck a nerve, because everybody is experiencing this- people cant put their finger on why theyre so indecisive.Since the book came out things have only gotten worse, thanks to social media and apps like Tinder. Its not just about choosing cereal and toothpaste- its now about choosing romantic partners. Young people are faced with what seems to be an unlimited set of options, and I think its actually creating enormous difficulties for people as they try to develop serious romantic relationships.Instead of being liberated by all this choice, you get paralyzed.RyanHow do you think the combination of the ease and frequency of use of a phone impacts the development of people in general?BarryThats a hard one to answer, partly because people ch ange. At the moment theres a lot of bad consequences associated with this ease of communication, because one of the things thats happening is that what communication means has changed. Its become more superficial. People are thinking less and talking more. Theyre unbelievably distracted. The result is that you can talk to a lot of people about very trivial things, but its harder to talk to a few people about things that require real thought, real intimacy, real extended conversation.Thats the way things are now. But people adapt, so its entirely possible that people who grew up with all of this will find a way to make this ease of communication into something that actually fosters real communication, instead of the superficiality we have now.People are thinking less and talking more.RyanAre you familiar with Daniel Kahnemans work on system one vs. system two?BarryVery much so. Ive been teaching it for twenty-five years. RyanSystem one is the brains fast and automatic, intuitive appr oach. System two is the minds slower analytical mode where reason dominates. Im curious from your perspective, the potential relationship withThe Paradox of Choiceand some of Kahnemans work. Does having an overwhelming number of choices cause our minds to shift from one to two? Is that responsible for paralysis by analysis?BarryHaving an overwhelming number of choices is certainly responsible for paralysis by analysis. But what I dont know is whether lots of options actually shifts people from the intuitive mode to the more analytic mode. It might, but sometimes what happens when you go to the grocery store and you see a hundred different kinds of cereal is you just buy the same thing you bought last week. So you rely entirely on habit. You dont think at all and I think that may be what gets us through our shopping trips. If we didnt do that wed spend our whole lives at the grocery. That suggests the decision domain becomes so overwhelming that you just shut down all your analytical tools.So I dont know. Its an interesting question.RyanYouve stated the secret to happiness is low expectations. Can you expand on that?BarryThats a little bit of an overstatement, but that is what I said. Having lots of options only raises the expectations. If jeans come in three hundred styles, then one of them ought to be perfect. If they only come in two styles, then only an idiot expects perfection. So when we evaluate things characteristically, we ask, Is this as good as I expected it to be? And if you have high expectations, the answer is almost always going to be no. So if you have lower expectations, then often the answer to the question will be yes. What are some specific, tactile ways that you have implemented that simplistic but true statement into your daily life to make you happier?BarryOne is I try to manage expectations. When I encounter something really extraordinary, I deliberately make that kind of experience rare, not common, so that I will continue to appreciate it. I often have a glass of wine at dinner, and I get great pleasure out of a good fifteen-dollar bottle of wine. If I started routinely drinking thirty-dollar wine, initially Id get even more pleasure out of it, but then it would just become the wine I drink. Then Id need fifty-dollar wine. So I deliberately drink good wine infrequently, and in that way continue to appreciate how good it is.The other thing I do is choose things that are good enough, and not worry about whether theyre the best. You dont even know what the best is in most categories, but you sure as hell dont need to find it. When you read consumer reports telling you that there are200 wa shing machines, and all but three of them are fine, you dont need to pick the best of the197 remaining fine washing machines. Just pick one.An environment of unlimited choice encourages us to find the best- this is also an enemy of satisfaction. Its easy to say, but its a little harder to put into practice if thats not your style. But I think its worth learning how to be satisfied with good enough.Choose things that are good enough, and do not worry about whether theyre the best. You dont even know what the best is in most categories, but you sure as hell dont need to find it.RyanHow does that relate to relationships?BarryTo say that people looking for life partners should just choose one who is good enough is like going against the religion of modern society. But I have a feeling that a lot of perfectly good relationships dont get developed because both parties or at least one party is continually looking over the other persons shoulder in case somebody better might be coming by.Re ady for more big ideas like this? Some of the more notable items in the collection include the Neville stationary steam engine and the Ljungstrm counter-rotating steam turbine, the FIAT 8V and FIAT-Ferrari Dino automobile engines, and the Siemens-Halske Sh.IIIa counter-rotary aircraft engine and the General Electric J47 turbojet engine. (Photo by Wil Haywood, Public Information) During her presentation of the Historic Mechanical Engineering Heritage Collection plaque, ASME Past President Madiha El Mehelmy Kotb noted several reasons the museums collection was significant, including that the collection was novel because the engines are displayed in the museum without their coverings and because the types of engines were varied, ranging from everyday engines used in factories to high-performance automobile and airplane engines. The collection is also chronological, displaying the evolution of engine technology from the late 19th through late 20th centuries, and shows the many fields that are touched by mechanical engineering, including transportation, manufacturing and agriculture, she said. Subsequent attempts were interrupted by the war, and the climbers returned to the legendary mountain only at the end of the 1940s.In 1957, another tragedy took place on the Eiger, and the accompanying rescue operation is still considered one of the most remarkable examples of cooperation and sacrifice in the mountains. After two days of climbing, on August 3 at 300 a.m., two Italians, Claudio Corti, and Stefano Longhi, joined forces with the German duo Gnther Nothdurft and Franz Mayer to tackle the north wall. It was a treacherous climb because of rapidly-changing weather conditions in which mountaineers quickly lost their way on the wall, the battle to reach the top soon became a fight for life.Due to officially communicated regulations forbidding rescuers from Grindelwald on the north wall, a rescue party spontaneously formed consisting of climbers from seven countries present in the area. The group of 50 people was coordinated by Ludwig Wiggerl Gramminger, assisted by, among others, Italys famous Ricardo Cassin, and Lionel Terray from France, who had, in 1947, become only the second person to ascend the north wall. The following days demonstrated one of the most moving examples of genuine team spirit, commitment, motivation, and innovation, resultin g in the rescue of Claudio Corti. Unfortunately, he was the only one saved. Stefano Longhi died, waiting for help, and both Germans remained missing their bodies undiscovered until 1961.I wondered what caused a random group of people, who did not know each other, to create such a remarkable, super-effective team that achieved the impossible? What triggered the powerful involvement of people who not only underwent immense physical and mental effort but even risked their own health and lives? Answers to these questions came quite quickly.VisionFirst of all, the team had a geistesbild (saving as many climbers as possible), the realization of which, was deeply believed. In business conditions, unfortunately, we often forget how an effective binder can become a thrilling vision in which our people believe. We focus on strategies and specific goals, we treat the vision with a degree of neglect.Even if we communicate it, we do not pay too much attention to it and often our effort goes to w aste. I always say that there are three golden rules of communication make sure the message has reached the recipient (i.e. those who were meant to hear about the vision, actually heard it), make sure it was properly understood (as the sender has assumed, not the way it was convenient to interpret by the recipient) and most importantly that it was bought into, that is, recipients deeply believe in its feasibility and identify with it.In the case of the rescue mission in 1957, these three conditions were met, and the vision became the driving force of the whole undertaking.ValuesPeople in the pursuit of values can do extraordinary things, often showing commitment, which is difficult to buy even for very large sums of money. Look at the rescue operations after natural disasters, look at the assistance activities, look at the actions of charity workers and volunteers. And in business? Values are often treated as HR window dressing, not translating into concrete results.This is a fatal approach, depriving managers of an effective recruitment and motivation tool if we can clearly define what distinguishes us on the market and then hire people who believe in the same values, we can be confident about their involvement.VengeanceIt is often said that people unite against a common enemy it is sufficient to look at the amazing levels of commitment found in terrorist cells, hooligan environments, and extreme factions of political and religious organizations. In business, too, we often reach for metaphors from the battlefield, talking about conquering the market or engaging in a price war with competitors.A great motivator also turns out to be anger at failure (even if we get angry at ourselves). For this reason, we should not suppress it if we conduct the discussion well, we can not only understand the mistakes made but also release the incredible energy in the team.
